I sell prints of my photos through Imagekind. It’s an interesting experiment and I thought I’d ask a couple of their best selling photographers how they did it. Here is the first interview, with Eyal Nahmias.
How long have you been selling your photos on Imagekind?
I joined Imagekind in November 2006.
You’re listed amongst the bestsellers on Imagekind. How long did it take you to achieve this level of sales?
It took some time. Since the volume of prints bought raises the seller’s ranking, my volume of sales /purchases rose dramatically after I had to purchase personally a large amount of images to be printed on 20×30 for an exhibition I did in Israel last March. Many of those images were sold to the public, and others through the Imagekind search engine and referrals.
What three pieces of advice would you give to a photographer who wants to successfully sell his or her work on Imagekind?
I believe that image quality, technical skill and creativity are among the most important factors in any photographer’s success. If the image is visually strong, the composition is excellent and the subject / concept of the photograph stand above other images in the same category, than it will increase sales.
When working with an agency that sell your images the element of marketing is taken into consideration. The photographer should use title, category and keywords in a way that anyone looking for an image will find it immediately. Key wording is critical for great sales. If you have an image of a person in a specific setting, give the keywords that describe the mood, location, event and concept. Avoid listing all the items that might be in the image but are secondary. (Eyes, nose, fingers etc.)
Marketing means using tools given by the photographer to drive the buyers to the site. Add links and bottoms in your email and website to further drive traffic, use programs offered by the site that may increase traffic and participate in the blog discussion and taking the time to review and comment on other artists work.
Be an active photographer /artist. Replenish and contribute high quality images on a regular basis, and than use the marketing techniques to inform the buyers. Don’t be stagnant, and be creative with fresh concept and new images.
How do you promote your Imagekind Gallery? How important are your website and blog in promoting your Gallery?
As mentioned before, I use my own website www.eyalphotography.com to increase my exposure. I use the “Purchase” page as a link directed to each specific image in Imagekind, thus giving the buyer the option to create his own frame, size, paper choice and matting. I recommend the print quality and service to anyone who sees them and use google bots to further increase my exposure.
What promotion tips can you give to our readers?
Build your own website in a way that will attract people. Make sure it’s clean, organized, rich and beautiful. Use links, referrals and blogging.
At the time of writing you have 13 Galleries of photos on your Imagekind site. Which are your best sellers? Any theory on why people like these images?
My landscape botanical wildlife and Elephant seals are among the best. I believe that the visual impression and the artistic qualities are what makes people want to have them in their homes or businesses. I think that an image that gets a “wow” reaction is more likely to be sold.
How closely do you analyze the stats on your Imagekind site? Can you tell us how many views you get each week, and what percentage of these convert into sales? In other words, in order to generate decent revenue from Imagekind, how many visitors do we need to drive to a site?
I watch my stats closely. It’s in the tens of thousands views already but I can’t create an accurate estimate as to how many are sold. I noticed that after posting new images traffic is increased but sales may not follow suite. I believe that staying with Imagekind for the long run will only establish me more as a known artist thus my exposure and sales will follow suite. I’m in for the long haul and believe that Imagekind is one of the best tools I have to sell my images.

Imagekind is a wonderful organization. It managed to bring talented and creative artist from around the globe under one roof providing an environment that stimulates creativity and cooperation. The stuff is amazing and with all my dealings with them, they did above and beyond to ensure that my prints, deadlines and transactions were smooth and without any problems.
